More Flooding Along U.S. / Canadian Border

Heavy rains and flooding in North Dakota and Saskatchewan are once again affecting roadways and U.S. / Canadian border crossings.

Highway 47 was closed from the Noonan / Estevan border crossing up to the city of Estevan due to a washout.   At various times a stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway has been underwater near Wolseley, forcing traffic in both directions to be rerouted.  Highway 39 north of Weyburn is closed to westbound traffic and Highway 35 south of the city is closed entirely.

Flood warnings were also in effect across the Montérégie region, including the Richelieu River, Lake Champlain and the Acadie River.   Towns and border crossings along the Vermont / Quebec border such as Alburg / Noyan are making flood preparations as water continues to build in rivers and reservoirs.

Check our site for the current weather and road conditions for the port you are planning to use  before heading into these areas.

Lane Added to Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle Border Crossing

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced that an additional lane for processing travellers has been installed at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle / Champlain / Blackpool border crossing.

The Canadian port now has 9 lanes with one lane dedicated to NEXUS card holders.  During the summer months this border crossing is very heavily used and it handles over 500,000 vehicles during July and August alone.  Delays and congestion can be significant so check border wait times on our website before you head towards the border.

Summer Border Crossing Construction

As you head to the U.S. / Canadian border this summer you are likely to be greeted with either construction projects or perhaps a newly improved port.   The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) is in the process of upgrading almost half of the U.S. ports along the border while Canada is also doing upgrades and road repairs.

The U.S. is constructing an entirely new facility at the Van St Leonard-Van Buren Bridge between Maine and New Brunswick.  It is  scheduled for completion by July 2013.

Among the newly upgraded U.S. border offices are the the Sherwood / Carievale and Westhope / Coulter ports in North Dakota.   These new U.S. border facilities were funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Canada is closing the NEXUS lanes at the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge for 2 days while construction is underway at that port.  They are also closing the Thousand Islands Bridge NEXUS lands for an undetermined amount of time during construction at that site.   The lane normally dedicated to NEXUS will be used to process commercial vehicles during the construction period.
