Ongoing construction at the Eastport / Kingsgate border crossing between Idaho and British Columbia will cause significant delays for passenger and commercial vehicles this week. Canada is building a new Customs facility at this location and all traffic entering the U.S. will be funneled into a single lane from April 25 to April 29, 2011.
Officials are recommending that both passenger and commercial vehicles use a different port this week if possible. Alternatives include the ports at Porthill / Rykerts, Roosville / Grasmere in Montana or even Sweetgrass / Coutts depending on your destination. Roosville is open 24 hours a day, while the port at Porthill has more limited hours for both passenger and commercial vehicles. Sweetgrass is a full service port open 24 hours per day.
