Whitetail Border Closure Hearings

The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is proceeding with plans to close the Whitetail / Big Beaver port at the U.S. and Canadian border in Montana.   Canada has already decided to close their side of the port and could not be convinced to keep it open by sharing the U.S. Customs station that was being upgraded with stimulus money.

The port will likely be closed later in 2011 after a 90-day congressional review, a 60-day public comment period and then a final decision by the agency.

This rural port is one of a few that services a long stretch of the border in northeastern Montana. It is largely used by local residents and farmers.  For more information see the Whitetail / Big Beaver border crossing at ezbordercrossing.com .

Canada Closing 3 Ports & Reducing Hours at 4 others

The Canadian Border Services Agency has announced that on April 1, 2011, it is closing the U.S. Canadian border crossings at Jamieson’s Line, and Franklin Centre in Quebec as well as Big Beaver in Saskatchewan. They are also reducing hours at the Glen Sutton, East Pinnacle and Morses Line border crossings.

As of this writing, the U.S. Customs and Border Service has not announced what they intend to do at these crossings.  There is the possibility they will become “one-way ports” – you could enter the U.S. through them but could not enter Canada.  This is a very undesirable situation and it is therefore possible that the U.S. will match the Canadian actions and similarly close or reduce hours at these 6 ports.

New Peace Bridge Nexus Lane

Published: 1/28/2011

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has installed a second NEXUS lane within the Peace Bridge CBSA plaza.  The lane will be opened during high-volume traffic periods such as regional sporting events, commuter periods, and the traditionally heavy summer period.  The new NEXUS lane will be available in inspection lane number two beside the existing NEXUS lane #1. The original dedicated NEXUS #1 will continue its regular hours (seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. / 10 p.m. for Buffalo Sabres home games).

The Peace Bridge is the busiest NEXUS corridor in the region.  For additional information about the Peace Bridge border crossing see: https://ezbordercrossing.com/list-of-border-crossings/new-york/peace-bridge/
