A new northbound NEXUS lane opened on Wednesday, July 25, 2012 at the Sumas / Abbotsford
border crossing between Washington State and British Columbia. With the installation of a southbound NEXUS lane in May, this port now has NEXUS service in both directions.

The southbound NEXUS lane entering the U.S. is open between the hours of 7am and 7pm, seven days a week, while the Canadian NEXUS hours are 8am to 8pm.

NEXUS service entering Canada is in the farthest left northbound on Washington State Highway 9 as it approaches the customs and border inspection checkpoint.

The U.S. and Canada have lifted the NEXUS requirement that citizens must have resided in one of the countries for at least 3 years.  This will benefit citizens who  may currently be residing abroad, or who have recently returned to Canada or the United States.

NEXUS is a form of “trusted traveler” program that is designed to speed your drive across either the U.S. or Canadian border. It can also be used for flying into certain airports and for marine travel. This card is very useful to commuters who must cross the border on a frequent basis.  NEXUS members frequently avoid long wait times at border crossings by using dedicated lanes.   We have seen reports claiming NEXUS members saved an average of 30 minutes at land crossings.

We have additional information on NEXUS including how to apply to the program on our page describing “Types of Border Crossing Documentation”.

Ambassador Bridge – Bike the Bridge Event

On June 17, 2012 the Ambassador Bridge will close one lane of traffic to allow Canadian and American cyclists the opportunity to bike across the bridge.   About 200 cyclists participate in the event which typically starts at 7:00 am and runs most of the day.  The impact on bridge traffic should be over by 8:00 or 9:00 am.

Traffic congestion on the bridge will be of course be somewhat heavier than usual during this event so plan your border crossing between Michigan and Ontario accordingly.  Local roads in the area may also be crowded with cyclists so be on the lookout.
