Stepped Up Holiday Law Enforcement

Police in New York State, Provincial Ontario, and Quebec are coordinating law enforcement activities over the U.S. Columbus Day / Canadian Thanksgiving Day long weekend.  Called “Safety Without Borders,” this effort will target traffic violations such as speeding, failure to wear seat belts, impaired driving and use of hand-held electronic devices.

Police will focus on roads in the proximity of the major international border crossings, and other popular routes of travel.  There will be special attention around the New York ports in Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Thousand Islands, and Blackpool / Champlain.  Other border states also step up law enforcement over long weekends such as these.

This is the fourth time Canadian and New York law enforcement have teamed up for the holidays. The New York State Police, Ontario Provincial Police, and Surete du Quebec also worked cooperatively during the Easter, Independence Day, and Labor Day holidays.  Police on both sides of the borders stopped more than 10,000 vehicles and issued nearly 6,000 tickets during these three holidays.
